Frequently Asked Questions About the APPE Merger |
Effective Date of Merger
When did the RCREC merger with APPE become effective?

Focus and Structure of the RCREC
Will the primary focus continue to be on the “Responsible Conduct of Research”? The affiliation of RCREC with APPE is a logical combination because both organizations have a primary interest in practical ethics. The RCREC will naturally maintain its focus on the practical aspects of training in the responsible conduct of research.
What is the governing body of RCREC?
The RCREC Executive Committee is replaced by the RCREC Standing Committee. The RCREC Standing Committee is a committee appointed by and answering to the APPE Executive Committee. However, the RCREC Standing Committee has substantial autonomy for pursuing the goals of promoting RCR education. APPE members who have also become members of RCREC will nominate representatives to serve on the RCREC Standing Committee. Nominations will be scheduled on or near July 1 of each year.
Who is eligible to be a member of the APPE/RCREC Standing Committee?
Any individual RCREC member or representative of an organizational RCREC member of APPE can be nominated to be a member of the RCREC Standing Committee.
I’m currently a member of an RCREC subcommittee. Will the subcommittee activity continue?
All subcommittees will remain active, but their roles and membership will evolve as appropriate to the goals of the RCREC.

Current members of RCREC
What if I already renewed my RCREC membership on March 1, 2006 or later?
The transition to membership in APPE began May 1. The APPE membership year runs July 1 - June 30. Current RCREC memberships that were paid effective March 1, 2006 or later will be granted a complimentary APPE membership through June 2006 and a regular membership starting July 1, 2006 and extending though June 30, 2007. Full membership dues for the next year will be due July 1, 2007.
What if I renewed my RCREC membership after July 1, 2005 , but before March 1, 2006?
For those who renewed their RCREC membership after July 1, 2005 but before March 1, 2006, their designated APPE dues needed on July 1, 2006 will be prorated based upon how many months of RCREC dues remain beyond the July 1, 2006 deadline. For example, if a member had joined the RCREC effective October 1, 2005, then on July 1, 2006 that member would have 3 months of membership remaining, and the member’s APPE dues to be paid on July 1, 2006 would only be 9/12 of the annual APPE dues normally paid. Full membership dues for the next year would be due July 1, 2007.
What do I do if our organization’s designated member leaves our organization? Who should I contact?
Until June 30, 2006, any questions about changes in member contact information can be addressed to Diane Ballard (858) 822-2647, ethics@ucsd.edu. Beginning July 1, 2006, the contacts will be Markaye Bleth or Brian Schrag, appe@indiana.edu, (812) 855-6450, in the office of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics.
